Wear Your Own Skin demo

aka Fur Free Friday

ARAUNY is hosting this peaceful, legal, educational demo the day after Thanksgiving. Join us! Together we will not only protest the use of, and profitting from selling dead animal skin (fur, wool, leather, down, silk, etc.), but we will advocate the alternatives: bamboo, soy, hemp, synthetics.

Signs will be provided, or you may bring your own.

ARAUNY requests the following of participants. Please:

* do NOT wear any animal skin to this demo (no leather, down, wool, etc.)

* park on side streets - but not in the store's plaza

* please, do NOT speak to or shout at customers. They are the ones we really need to reach, teach, enlighten. Our mere presence in front of that store already makes them squirm (though they may not show it). This is a case where our silence will be much louder than verbal attacks. Even though we may feel like shouting, it is not productive, plus it gives them reason to dismiss all AR activists, rather than seeing us as approachable. We want them to consider our points! Hopefully, as they drive away with their new furs, they'll at least be aware they are doing something they need to rethink! Again, please refrain from speaking to or shouting at customers.

* 11/27/09 (Friday, the day after Thanksgiving)
* Held Projansky Fur Store, 2240 Monroe Ave, Rochester NY 14618
* 12:00noon - 1:30pm

Remember:
- dress for the weather
- there are no bathrooms close by (you'd have to drive some distance)

Thank you for your advocacy, and we look forward to you joining ARAUNY in this "Wear Your Own Skin" demo.

Rochester Labor Day Parade

Click to enlarge
ARAUNY marched in the Labor Day parade again this year.

The purpose of the parade, of course, is to honor and unite people in the labor movement, so our theme this year was support of workers in vegetable farming.

We donned animal masks and costumes and got quite a warm, happy response from the kids and parents alike as we helped other non-union community groups make it a huge Rochester event in support of laborers of all kinds.

More photos coming!

VIGIL FOR ANIMALS

Martha Sullivan, Katey Burke and Felicity Brach reading. JohnMark Smeenk interpreting. Click to enlarge.

7:00pm
Washington Square Park, S.Clinton and Court Streets, Rochester NY

* all are welcome
* BRING A CANDLE
* ceremony of selected readings, no open-mic

Tortured lives, untimely deaths - too many, too soon. All species of nonhuman animals fall victim to the heavy-hands of humans. The hunted—seals, whales, wolves. Nonhumans we use for profit, animals we eat, wear, vivisect, use for entertainment. Cults, the animal targeted by a scorned lover, those killed by cruel neighbors, impatient police, incompetent rescuers. A bear in a tree, barking dogs, too many crows, horses no longer profitable for racing, calves killed in rodeos. The list is endless and heartbreaking.

Sentience ignored, forgotten, overlooked...
Let us take time to focus on the lives of ALL animals,
remember them, celebrate them, honor them.

Bring a candle and join us in a Vigil For Animals.

Palin Protest
A group of ARAUNY activists traveled to Auburn, NY on short notice to protest a visit
by Alaska governor Sarah Palin, specifically because of her relentless murder of
animals. Defining herself as prolife, Palin continues to lead Alaska in aerial wolf
hunts, and is known for hunting, as evidenced by draped carcass decor in her home
and office. Our Pink-Poster-Protest caught the eyes of other activists present, as
well as the media.

LOCATION: Blue Cross Arena, 1 War Memorial Sq, Rochester NY 14614
at the corner Broad Street and Exchange Blvd
DIRECTIONS: here, or use this map

  Allow yourself time to find parking (lots in the area, or on streets) and to walk over to the Blue Cross Arena

We ask the following of protesters:

Protest peacefully and legally. This means
 - Stay on the sidewalk, usually close to the street (not in the building).
 - Please do not taunt those who are rude to us. Be courteous.
  Often they are angry because they've already paid for tickets, planned
  their day and are already there, but remember, the children are watching!

Wear all black unless you are dressing in costume (e.g. clown, animal). This is a sad event.

 Signs and literature will be provided by Animal Rights Advocates of Upstate NY.
You are also welcome to bring your own.

 Please do not bring companion animals to the protest.

Advocate for the exploited and the enslaved.

NOW is the time for each of us to write to schools (who often get free tickets), to the
editors of newspapers, to Mayor Duffy, to Rochester City Council--anywhere--to educate
people about the violence promoted by circuses with animals. Ask that they NOT support
Ringling, that they NOT attend Ringling Circus when it comes to town. Write NOW, as much
as you can, and remember to suggest alternatives:
